There are hundreds of places to sample wines in Sonoma County. Where you choose to go depends on the kind of experience you seek. As an alternative to hitting the big wineries in the main growing regions, there is also an excellent time to be had by sampling 'boutique' wines (from producers who make only a few hundred cases or less). For a splendid time sampling boutique vino, WCC highly recommends the Sonoma Wine Shop, located in the heart of the square on the west side of the Historic Sonoma Plaza.
The proprietors of this longtime establishment have dubbed themselves "Social Director" Bryan Cooper and "Wine Ambassador" Ken Malone. Gregarious Bryan and informative Ken take wine very seriously, but fortunately for their guests, they don't take themselves so seriously. Both experts offer an unpretentious and revealing glance at some of the best wines in the region, and at reasonable prices. Mr. WCC and I are members of the wine club, and consistently are pleased with the choices made and mailed by this merry band of wine lovers. Fellow members of our wine club write rave reviews from their hometowns all over the country. For a sampling, read them here.
Mr. WCC making his choice for 'Wine of the Week'As you enter, pay attention to the hand carved wood wine racks displaying your many choices. Each piece is a singular work of art, handcrafted by a local cabinet maker, depicting the Sonoma Valley, the Russian River Valley, Goat Rock State Beach, among other scenes.

Wander into the back room for a sampling of notable wines grown all over California. Bryan and Ken will answer any viticulture question you have. Choose some fine cheeses from the adjacent Cheese Shop (run by The Sonoma Wine Shop, reopening this summer) and settle in the back at the rustic table for pure afternoon delight.
