Winery of the Week: Ledson

The Highway 12 corridor that connects Kenwood and Glen Ellen to Sonoma is the location of many of the finest wineries in the region. The famous author Jack London once called this enchanted place the 'Valley of the Moon'. At the northern most spot on this spectacular stretch is Ledson Winery, also known as 'The Castle.' One glance at the architecture, and you'll understand why.

Ledson winery was built in 1993 by founder Steve Noble Ledson. Mr. WCC and I have visited Ledson over a dozen times in the course of our explorations, because we enjoy everything about this unique location. The Gothic French-Normandy structure is over the top stunningly beautiful. There are several tasting bars located within, and if you're a club member, climb the stairs for the royal treatment.

What we like most about Ledson is not just the wines, but the grounds as well. The photos here do not show the truly tranquil experience offered to visitors, especially in summer and fall, when the gardens and vineyards are showing at their peak. Ledson provides picnic tables and benches shaded by 100 year old majestic oaks, and a European style fountain nestled outside next to the grapevines. It's very easy find yourself lingering a bit longer at Ledson on your wine tasting tour, people watching, picnicking, and sipping the afternoon away.

Speaking of picnics, this winery also features a gourmet market where guests can order a seasonal sandwich at the deli, and hand pick items for a foodie feast. Take time to peruse other renowned local products, like Sonoma Lavender gifts or Girl & the Fig creations (I highly recommend their fig balsamic vinegar). There is no shortage of olive oils, specialty condiments, and of course, Ledson wines, for you to purchase as a souvenir of your time spent here.
